Our History

HealthCare Partners doctors have been serving Southern California for more than 40 years, proving our commitment to our communities.

HealthCare Partners Medical Group continues to grow and evolve as new opportunities arise that meet our vision, values, and goals. HealthCare Partners Medical Group is the result of the mergers since 1992 of several innovative Southern California medical groups and the development of several independent physician associations (IPAs).

Supporting our medical group model is our HealthCare Partners Provider Network (HPPN) developed in additional areas of the San Gabriel Valley and central Los Angeles County to serve our patients. Our Alliance/Unified (IPA) model supports our regional patient populations in the San Fernando Valley, Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley, central Los Angeles and the South Bay.

The doctors who lead this business venture share the same vision and intimately understand the rapidly changing environment of health care. They identified and made use of each medical group's core competencies to emerge as leaders in the health care industry.

As a result of a merger with the medical consulting firm, The Camden Group, HealthCare Partners now has an even greater ability to identify and develop practice management opportunities nationwide, bringing added value to medical group clients in such areas as strategic planning, integrated delivery system development and implementation; independent physician association (IPA) and medical group formation and management; and network development.

Timeline

1992 – A merger creates our company
The company, as we know it today, began on April 1, 1992, when California Primary Physicians and Huntington Medical Group joined forces. California Primary Physicians was founded in 1975 by seven board-certified internists and emergentologists, operating originally as a hospital-based practice. In 1980, it moved to its downtown location and quickly earned its mark as a progressive, multi-specialty medical practice, committed to providing quality care to Los Angeles's inner city population, and the under-served San Gabriel Valley.
Huntington Medical, also founded by seven physicians, first opened for business in Pasadena in 1980. The practice grew to include 275 employees and 350 staff and contracted physicians providing health care to communities throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
On Nov. 10, 1992, Universal Medi-Co was added to our team, marking a new era for our employees, physicians and patients.

1993 – HealthCare Partners is named

On Sept. 1, 1993, we introduced our new name, HealthCare Partners Medical Group.

1994 – Bay Shores Medical Group Joins In

In 1994, Bay Shores Medical Group joined our team to become one of Southern California's leading providers of quality care. Bay Shores Medical Group, Inc. originated in 1956 under the name Redondo Beach Medical Clinic as a partnership led by three general practitioners. The 502 Torrance Boulevard building was where it all began. Bay Shores provides health care to the South Bay area.

1996 – Alliance of Private Practice Physicians Merges

Alliance of Private Practice Physicians merged with HealthCare Partners in September of 1996.

1997 – Memorial Medical Group, Unified Physicians of the South Bay Affiliates

In 1997, Memorial Medical Group, a premier medical group serving the Long Beach area for more than 50 years, joined HealthCare Partners. It serves our Long Beach community as Memorial Medical Group, a division of HealthCare Partners.

Also in 1997, HealthCare Partners also acquired Unified Physicians of the South Bay. Founded in 1994, Unified Physicians of the South Bay was one of the last independent physician organizations in the area. The IPA includes 140 primary care providers and 210 specialists, and serves the cities of Carson, Torrance, Redondo Beach, Lomita, Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Gardena, Harbor City, San Pedro and Wilmington.

Alliance and Unified Physicians are both HealthCare Partners' independent physician associations whose missions are to offer patients an extensive network of quality primary and specialty care physicians and health care services.

2001 – Merger with Greater Valley Medical Group

In 2001, our merger with Greater Valley Medical Group in the San Fernando Valley enhanced our service to patients in West Hills, Mission Hills, Van Nuys and surrounding areas.

2005 – Harriman Jones Merger

In January, Harriman Jones Medical Group joined us, making HealthCare Partners the dominant provider organization in the Long Beach area. Harriman Jones, with 50 employed physicians and clinicians and 275 non-clinical employees, serves about 45,000 patients at three multi-specialty staff-model offices in Long Beach, Los Alamitos, and La Palma.
